Family files wrongful death suit following police-involved shooting

ABINGTON, Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against Abington Township and the officers involved in a fatal shooting earlier this year.

Nineteen-year-old Wyleek Tinsley died after he was shot by police who responded to a domestic disturbance call at the Rosemore Gardens Apartments in the Glenside section of Abington on March 6.

Tinsley lived there at the apartment with his girlfriend.

According to the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office, officers heard a woman screaming and a gunshot inside. When they entered, they saw Tinsley holding an unknown object.

Investigators later discovered it was his cellphone, with his dad on the other line.

His father spoke about the moments officers opened fire.

"When he FaceTimed me, I could see the inside of the apartment. I hear a door being kicked in and 5-6 gunshots, and I just knew my son was gone," said Douglas Tinsley.

Joseph Marrone, the family's attorney, is calling for the release of the body cam footage, which they say illustrates a different story from the one authorities are telling.

"There's a lot of concern about what we've seen on those tapes and if these officers are not being trained properly, if they're not following proper policies or procedures. It's important that it's corrected because the community deserves better," said Marrone.

Montgomery County Prosecutors said the officers' actions were justified.
